5 Questions with Fashion Designer Oni Auer, Creator of ONIKAI.

Before/after my 2011 Fashion presentation I did a few interviews with websites and blogs… here is my favorite so far that came out yesterday:

5 Questions with Fashion Designer Oni Auer, Creator of ONIKAI.  Via Dawn Tanner of “Just My Thoughts”

Thousands of people, maybe even more, move from all over the world each day to beautiful Los Angeles, California to pursue their life-long dreams.  Imagine moving to Los Angeles, CA at the age of just 17 years old.  Now imagine doing so all alone.  Survival seems impossible right?  There are adults who travel to Los Angeles with big dreams of becoming the “next big thing” but are unable to remain focused on the reason they came.  But that was not the case for the talented designer, Oni Kai Auer.  She traveled to Los Angeles with a plan, a plan to do one thing, design.  In just five questions I was able to learn a lot about what it takes to be Oni, who is now the President of her own line ONIKAI.  I had the pleasure of meeting her at her 2011 Fashion Presentation this past Friday, and let me just say, she has one of the kindest spirits I’ve ever been in acquaintance with.  Here’s her story:

1.)  How long have you been designing and what inspires your look for your pieces?

I’ve been designing for about 8 years now. I officially started my career designing for BCBG Corp. when I was 18 years old, but I interned and designed for fun before my career even started. It took a few years before I realized the importance of having an identity as a designer and not just being a corp. designing robot machine. Ha-ha. My cut n’ sew line is brand new so I know that the look will evolve, and grow… But right now I design with the idea in mind “would an LA girl wear this?” And not just ANY Los Angelino but one with a sense of style, who might takes risks but still believes in a fairly simple silhouette with a minor twist. I’m inspired with the idea of seeing a stranger walking down the street in something that I designed… Which has actually happened before and it’s a great feeling…. (continued)
